How do I give this medication?

Probiotics for pets are living, helpful bacteria. They may be used to support gut health or to help manage diarrhea.

Many probiotic products exist, and they do not all contain the same bacteria types or the same amounts. Use the exact product your veterinarian recommends.

Give this supplement the way your veterinarian tells you. Your veterinarian’s directions may not match what the product label says.

It is often suggested to give probiotics 1 to 2 hours before an antibiotic, or several hours after an antibiotic. Follow your veterinarian’s directions.

You may give this supplement with food or without food.

Give exactly what your veterinarian prescribed. Always follow the directions on the prescription label.

Side effects

Most pets handle probiotics well. Stomach upset can happen. Possible signs include vomiting, extra gas, or diarrhea.

Call your veterinarian if you notice ongoing stomach upset, including nausea, vomiting, too much gas, or diarrhea.

How will I know it's working?

If your pet’s signs get worse or do not get better, contact your veterinary clinic.

You should see some improvement in your pet’s signs within a few days, and you should see continued improvement over time.

If your pet has had signs for a long time, it may take longer to notice an effect.

How long will the medication effects last?

How long this supplement works can differ. It depends on the product used, why it is being given, and what bacteria normally live in your pet’s intestines.

How long do I give it for?

This supplement may be used for different time periods. Keep giving it for the length of time your veterinarian instructs.

Overdose

If you see an overdose happen, or you think an overdose may have happened, contact your veterinarian right away (a consultation fee applies).

If possible, have the product container or label with you.

Missed dose

In most situations, if you forget a dose:

  • Give it as soon as you remember, and then go back to the usual schedule.

If it is almost time for the next dose:

  • Do not give the missed dose.
  • Give the next dose at the regular time.
  • Continue with the normal schedule.

If you are not sure what to do, call your veterinary clinic. Do not give two doses at once and do not give extra doses.

Storage

In general, probiotics should be kept in a cool, dry place. Storage needs are not the same for every product, so follow the storage directions on the label.

Keep this product where children and animals cannot reach it.

Flavored versions are designed to taste good to animals. Store them securely and well out of reach to help prevent accidental overdose.

Disposal

Do not put this medication into the toilet and do not pour it into a sink drain. Put unused or expired product into the household trash.
